LETTER: Mayor Conley leads quietly by example

EDITOR: I have had the pleasure of representing the residents of Madison since 2003. When I complete my current term, I will have served on the Madison Borough Council for almost 15 years. During that time, I have worked with a number of mayors, but none can match (Democrat) Bob Conley’s dedication and love for this town. He is a compassionate person who is always willing to step out of his comfort zone in order to help people.

As a member of the council, I know him as a strong leader. But because he serves without boasting about his accomplishments, his strength is not always apparent. He leads quietly, by example.

Bob cares very much about our community. He never forgets a milestone in someone’s life and is quick to call public attention to our youngsters when they attain success in their athletic and educational lives. Young people are important to Bob, and he demonstrates this regularly in his official duties. As an example, whenever a group of Scouts come to visit Borough Hall, they quickly find themselves acting as “mayor and council for the day.” He creates experiences that they will long remember.

I can list multiple ways that Bob has contributed to making Madison what it is today, but I think the most important thing about him is how he brings respect to the position of mayor and how he respects everyone that he comes in contact with him — the town employees, those of us on the council, and the rest of the community. I am convinced that the mark of a true leader is someone who listens to all that is said and then helps everyone work together to build a consensus to do the right thing. That’s what Bob Conley does.

He’s a fine mayor, but he would be the first to tell you that it is necessary to have an effective team working together to get things done. And this year we have the opportunity to elect two great candidates in (Democrats) Maureen Byrne and Rachel Ehrlich to fill out the team. Maureen has served this town well over the past years as a community volunteer and as a member of the council. She is smart and caring and asks the right questions. Rachel is a breath of fresh air. She is articulate, loves Madison, and knows what needs to be done to make this a better place.

I ask the voters of Madison to join me in making sure we have four more years with the right person for Mayor of Madison. Please vote for Bob Conley and then vote for Maureen Byrne and Rachel Ehrlich for Madison Borough Council to ensure he has the right team with him.
