Madison Democratic Committee co-chairs Alix Jennings and Christine Preston and Borough Council President Eric Range and Council Member Melissa Honohan urge Madison college students to make a plan to vote in the November 5 General Election.
Honohan and Range are running unopposed for re-election to their two seats on the Madison Borough Council.
“2024 is a presidential year,” the candidates observed. “We believe that this could well be the most important in the nation’s history. When our fundamental democratic processes are under attack; we are already experiencing the effects of climate change daily; two major wars are being fought in the world; and reproductive freedom is gravely threatened in the U.S., all voters must be engaged in this election.”
In many ways, this election may well be more important for student voters than for all others,” added Co-chairs Jennings and Preston. “We both have children in college and we and they know that whom is elected in November could well impact them for the rest of their lives. The kind of country they and their children will live in – its government, personal and reproductive freedoms, gun violence, whether the climate is livable, the economy, and our relationships with the rest of the world are all at stake.
“We realize that voting can be a little trickier for college-age voters than it may be for their parents. Where college students may vote is determined by the address that they use to register to vote. Students may register to vote using their college address or their parents’/guardians’ home address. This is their choice.”
“For example, a student from Madison attending school in a “battleground state” like Michigan or Pennsylvania may decide that their vote in the presidential race is more important than a vote in New Jersey.” Added Co-chair Preston,“If so, they should register to vote as a resident of their school address.
Or they may decide that their state-wide and local elections are very important to them. In New Jersey, the Senate seat recently held by the disgraced Robert Menendez and all 12 Congressional seats are up for election. If voting as a Madison resident, they should apply for a mail-in ballot from the Morris Count Clerk at http://www.morriscountyclerk.org/Elections right away.”
Co-chair Jennings continued, “New Jersey residents who are 17 years old can register now and can begin voting once they turn 18. If they have moved here from out-of-state or from a different county in New Jersey to attend college and are registering with their college address, they must have resided at the new address for at least 30 days before the election to be eligible to vote from that address.
We provide guidance and links for registering or applying for mail-in ballots in Morris County on the MDC website: http://www.madisonnjdems.com or on the MDC Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MadisonNJDemCommittee,”
In closing, candidates Honohan and Range and MDC Co-Chairs Jennings and Preston urged all voters, especially young voters, to take action now to make a plan to vote and ensure their voice is heard in the November 5 election.
