Deb Coen for Council

Madison is a town that offers much to its residents, its business community, and its visitors. We have a beautiful downtown, strong schools, wonderful parks, and a vibrant sense of community. This has been achieved through the dedication of many professionals and volunteers working together to make Madison the special place it is today.

I first discovered Madison when I attended Drew University in the 90s, and I moved back in 2004 with my family. The small-town feel, walkability, and strong sense of community made it the ideal place to raise my family. Madison is home, and I am deeply committed to continuing to give back.

As a longtime public school teacher, I have spent my career fostering collaboration, problem-solving, and effective communication skills that have also guided my service to Madison. I have served on the Madison Board of Education, the Madison Zoning Board of Adjustment, and as a Madison Borough Council member from 2019 to 2023. In these roles, I have been involved in numerous committees and initiatives, including the Health Department, the Community Pool, the Finance and Borough Clerk liaison, and the Shared Services Committee. I also initiated and led programs such as the Community Conversations on racial justice, the Hidden Figures of Madison project, and the Fall Diversity Festival.

During my time on the Borough Council, I worked closely with my colleagues and borough administration to provide stable budgets, improve services, and invest in infrastructure. I collaborated with Eric Range to ensure accurate and timely public health communication during the pandemic and to support local businesses through initiatives like the Fall Waverly Place Concerts and Secret Santa Saturdays. Additionally, I spearheaded the Dodge Field Playground renovation, ensuring it was an inclusive space for all children.

I am proud of Madison’s strengths, including our vibrant downtown, walkability, and parks and trails. However, I also see areas where we can grow—such as better acknowledging our town’s diversity and addressing the need for more accessible starter homes. Ensuring that all Madison residents, regardless of income, background, or identity, feel heard and included is a priority for me.

As I seek to return to Borough Council, I am motivated by my love for this community and my desire to contribute to its future. I believe in honest, transparent leadership and the importance of listening to diverse perspectives. I want to continue fostering community events that are accessible to all, promoting inclusive discussions, and making informed decisions that support Madison’s long-term success.

I am excited about the opportunity to serve Madison once again, bringing my experience, dedication, and passion to the Borough Council.
