Declaring or Changing Party Affiliation

In New Jersey, you must be a member of a political party to vote in the Primary. A registered voter who wants to change their party affiliation must file a Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form 55 days before a Primary Election. You cannot change your affiliation at the polls.

A registered voter currently not affiliated with a political party may declare their party affiliation up to and including Primary Election day. In other words, you can show up at the polls, ask to declare your affiliation and vote for candidates in that party.

You do not need to be a member of a particular political party to vote for any candidate in the General Election.

In Morris County, you can make these changes online, by mail, or in person. Scroll down to the bottom of the Update Your Voter Registration page to learn more. It’s quick and easy to make a change.
